Microsoft Windows 7 diperkirakan keluar dalam 6 versi. Hal ini telah disampaikan oleh pihak Microsoft.
- Windows 7 Starter Edition, untuk kalangan OEM dari produsen PC.
- Windows 7 Home Basic, untuk pemakaian rumah dan PC murah.
- Windows 7 Home Premium, untuk mereka yang mengunakan PC dirumah tetapi memiliki fungsi penuh. Seperti fitur koneksi antar perangkat lain.
- Windowws 7 Professional, diperuntukan bagi kalangan bisnis dan profesional. Dimana penguna dapat bekerja dirumah, tetapi yang setara dengan pekerjaan IT manager dan penguna bisnis. Fitur khusus seperti sistem keamanan dan produktivitas lebih ditekankan. Mirip seperti Vista Business, dan dengan Windows 7 akan diberi nama Windows 7 Professional.
- Windows 7 Ultimate, Ini untuk pengila PC yang sering berganti hardware dengan sistem keamanan lebih baik seperti fungsi BitLocker yang dimiliki Windows 7 Enterprise.
- Windows 7 Enterprise, ini yang paling tinggi. Seluruh fitur Windows 7 ada diversi ini. Fitur khusus seperti Advanced Data Protection. Versi Ultimate tidak akan dijual ke pasar Retail atau untuk OEM PC.

Microsoft has now decided to launch its newest OS in 6 different versions namely Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, Ultimate. What do these versions offer to the average user? Microsoft intends for Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional to be the two editions that most consumers are apt to pick up.
Your Average Joe should target the former, whereas small business-themed customers will want to opt for the latter. Microsoft has yet to offer its official suggestions for or hardware recommendations for the operating systems, so stay tuned. However, Microsoft alleges that the various editions of Windows 7 will be able to run on a "very broad set of hardware, from small-notebook PCs (sometimes referred to as netbooks) to full gaming desktops."
